On Persuasive Copy For YOUR Business
Every Friday morning, I get up at 3:00 a.m., take a shower, put on the nicest clothes I can still fit into, and jump in the car by 4:00 for my weekly trip to The Big City to market my business.
I’ve been doing this every week, rain or shine (or blizzard), for more than six years.
Here’s why:
- This brings in approximately 100% of my business, which I’ve been told is the envy of many writers.
- At that time of day (which could truthfully be considered “night”), there isn’t much traffic on the interstate.
- I get to listen to the radio while I’m driving, and to turn it up as loud as I like.
- All my best friends – all of whom own and/or manage small business, like I do – will be there, and I get to see them every week.
- I’m kind of a nut.
- (One of those fellow entrepreneurs was my son, who owns two music schools, but he’s taking a break to – get this – take care of two music schools and three toddlers.)
This weekly journey forces me, a clear introvert, to stand up in front of 80-100 people every week and talk about my business for a few seconds. I also listen to my friends talk about their businesses, and I think of ways I can refer more business to them.
Yes, I’m a happy member of BNI, the world’s premier business networking organization. And my chapter, BNI Action Partners in Denver, is the biggest and most successful chapter in our time zone. Since there are dozens of chapters in Colorado alone, let alone in places like Bozeman, that’s sayin’ something.
Our BNI chapter is so big that we’ve opened up four other chapters within our chapter. (Kidding.) We pass about six million dollars around our room in closed business every year. (Not kidding.) And we have a nice collection of the finest humans on the planet.
If you’re a solo entrepreneur like me, or you own a small business (we’re looking for a CPA), you could do a whole lot worse than to find a BNI chapter near you (they’re everywhere), make your weekly drive, and figure out how to present your business to your clients every single week, in a few golden seconds.
Our fiscal year goes October 1 to September 30, so technically, today is my last day as President of BNI Action Partners. Next Friday, a fresh new team of leaders will take over and guide our chapter to even bigger and better things. Exciting!
If any of my Action Partners are reading this (and I know you are; some of you are keeping a keen eye out for typeos and germatical errors), I just want to say it’s been an honor serving as your iron-fisted dictator for the past twelve months.
Next week, I’ll be joining you out in the cheap seats as just another rank-and-file washed-up has-been president… and oh, how I’m looking forward to that!
As one of my friends would say, if you own or run a business and you’re not part of BNI, you should probably punch yourself in the face.
So join us!
We have doctors.
Key Take-Aways From This Edition
Well, if them Take-Aways ain't the Keyest! But who knows, Partner? Next month's could be even more Keyer. You'll just have to stay tuned to find out!
Discussion Questions
- 1Punch yourself in the face. Send a video
- 2How many BNI chapters do you think are in the Mountain Time Zone?
- 3If you had 30-50 seconds to present your business to, say, 40 or more people every week, would it be worth driving out early in the morning to do it?
Send your answers to michael@michaelhume.net… The most creative, inspirational response will be eligible to win a PRIZE! *
(* Prize is at the sole discretion of Michael Hume, his heirs and assigns, and a small focus group of iron-fisted dictators and washed-up ex-presidents. It’s a beautiful panel of judges. Perfect panel. Believe me. This month’s top prize may involve first aid for anyone who’s recently punched themselves in the face. Deadline makes no sense whatsoever. Prizes equal to sales where void and prohibited. Boring, lackluster, or unimaginative entries have no chance of winning, and may be punched in the face. So violent! You don’t want that. So keep it lively. Good luck!)
Last Month’s Grand Prize Winner: Jody R. of Aurora, Colorado won this month. Network with her for details. Next month, the big winner could be YOU!
