Michael Hume is the writer of hundreds of online articles and several books, including business books and murder mysteries. Lately, he’s focused his energies on “the Christmas business,” and he produces stories and music celebrating the birth (and Life) of Jesus.

Michael has been “home churched,” thanks to the blessing of having met and studied with some wonderful spiritual guides to whom he feels a great debt of gratitude. Michael’s first holiday novel was inspired by a casual conversation with family over Thanksgiving, many years ago.  It tells the tale of Dugger Coleman, an elderly nursing-home resident who’s looking forward to his 95th Christmas.  Dugger meets a mysterious stranger who offers him a business opportunity which is guaranteed to make him a millionaire by Christmas.  

Dugger has waited his whole life for a good business opportunity, having failed at several ventures during his long life, and he decides to go along with the opportunity.  What else does he have to do?  But the nature of his new business has everyone – from his friends, to his few surviving relatives, to Dugger himself – wondering whether The Christmas Business was going to turn out to be a scam… or a Christmas miracle.

This 460-page novel would make a great gift for someone on your “nice list” – it covers about 40 percent of American history, one Christmas at a time… it’s designed to be read a little each day as Christmas approaches, it explores what life is like for the elderly these days, and it contains the lyrics to 13 original Christmas songs which emerge in the story as though written by the characters.

The Innkeeper of Bethlehem

Fans of popular media fiction, such as the series The Chosen or movies like The Nativity Story and Risen, will love Michael’s short “gift” novel, The Innkeeper of Bethlehem.

The Christmas In Me

Michael Hume wrote his first holiday song, The Anniversary Carol, at the age of 26, and that tune is one of the 13 songs described in fiction in The 95th Christmas.  With the help of a world-class studio and some of the best musicians, singers, and sound engineers in the U.S., Michael produced his Christmas album as a companion to the book.

Welcome to The Christmas In Me, with the hope that it speaks to the Christmas in you.  Of course, as Charles Dickens would suggest, we all keep Christmas in our own way… or we try to leave it alone.  Either way, Michael believes it’s right there, inside us, all the time.  He’s not one of those people who believes Christmas comes but once a year, nor even merely once a day!

For Michael, the central message of this musical album is expressed in the title track: “Christ is born inside me, each and every day, to heal what I’ve denied me, and to wash my sins away.”  But in our world, Christmas has become this thing, this thing that doesn’t seem to have anything to do with Christ.  So Michael asserts that the Christmas inside us sometimes feels as different, from one moment to the next, as these 13 tunes are from one another.

Sometimes, it’s serious spiritual business, somber, like serving in The Army Of Christ, or like trudging through the desert like a Blessed Camel.  Sometimes, we get caught up in the stress and whirl of the modern-day “Christmas,” and start looking forward to the end of the season – If Christmas Doesn’t Kill Me first!

We sometimes find ourselves laughing at the whole thing (Don’t Regift My Heart), or just having a barrel-of-monkeys good time with it (Jingle Bell Jungle Ball).  But at all times, it’s there… the real Christmas… whether we’ve made room in our personal “inn” for it or not.

More Than Just A Business Writer

Michael has a creative side, too. He’s the author of several works of fiction, including the critically-acclaimed holiday novel The 95th Christmas. He’s a freelance writer, singer, and songwriter, and serves as Regional Director for The Original Dickens Carolers (perhaps the world’s premier holiday entertainment organization – certainly Colorado’s oldest and largest). He moonlighted at dinner theaters during his Army days, and went on to garner sizzling reviews during his career as a singer/actor in the Denver area in the 1980s and 1990s. Michael wrote his first musical, Two Cents Plain, when he was twenty. It was a flop. But hey! Twenty!

On The Personal Side

Later, when you’re playing Michael Hume Trivia with your family and friends, here are some little-known facts that’ll amaze and astound them:

On the bookshelves in Michael’s office, you’d find the complete works of Martin Luther, as well as the complete written works of Abraham Lincoln. A few copies of The 95th Christmas are there, too… signed by the author and waiting to put you in a holiday mood, any day of the year.

On the piano in his studio, you’d see a few scratchy, hand-written lead sheets from some of the 200 songs Michael has penned… everything from Christmas tunes like Bell On A Holiday and Jingle Bell Jungle Ball to R&B numbers from his old acappella group, The LoDo Air Band (which was slightly-famous for one of Michael’s originals, Funky Monkey).

In his side of the fridge, you’d find lots of proteins… but very few carbs. Michael’s a low-carb kinda guy.

You’d see reminders, all over the house, of some of Michael & Wife Kathryn’s favorite things: The Denver Broncos, The Colorado Rockies, Christmas (of course), and Don Quixote.

And in the backyard, you’d see the fire pit and stone benches where he and his wife like to enjoy the blazing western sunsets they’re blessed to witness nearly every evening.

Michael and Kathryn spend some time helping with the care of elderly family members these days. They are joined at home by their wonderful and beloved dog, Poppins.
