The Funny '22 Word PLAY! Year In Review

Word PLAY… Playful Monthly Commentary
On Persuasive Copy For YOUR Business

It’s here again, readers, the year’s gone away…
Tomorrow is scheduled to be New Year’s Day.
And what could be better to offer to you,
Than the First Yearly Year-End Fun Copy Review!

To kick the year off, back in last New Year’s cold,
We suggested your words be not boring, but bold!
“You’ll get people reading,” we said, and we meant.
(Some studies show increase of fifty percent.)

By Valentine’s Day, some readers were leery, us
Saying their copy need not be so serious.
But your ideal prospects want better from you
Than to publish what all your competitors do.

We Marched through the reasons your stuff should be fun:
The fact that folks instantly like you is one.
While Brand X puts out stuff that’s staid, stiff, and choppy,
Your stuff says “I’m fun!” And that, Brand X can’t copy.

In April, we said, have some personal flair,
And attract better clients! You know they’re out there.
Let Brand X have all the deal-seekers on Earth:
Your clients stay with you! And pay what you’re worth!

You needn’t be clownish, we said back in May,
A little light HUME-or will soon win the day.
No need to be dumb, and with dad jokes to bury us;
Just be lightly humorous. Not super hilarious.

You still make your marketing points, but you’re sly!
(At least, that’s our message from June and July.)
By August, you knew the full value of fun
In your marketing copy, and our work was done.

But wait! Just to drive home a point you’ll remember,
We kept right on going, from there to November.
And now we’ve arrived at the end of the year,
And hope that our Word PLAY! has filled you with cheer.

(If not, maybe you haven’t had enough beer.)

Key Take-Aways From This Edition

  • If you’re gonna kill time, at least make it rhyme.
  • Your marketing copy will make you more money
If you have the courage to let it be funny.
  • If every year’s bottom line’s just like the next,
Perhaps you’re just doing what’s done by Brand X.
  • They publish serious stuff that’s “old hat.”
The best clients want something better than that.

These Take-Aways, yes, they are certainly Key,
But wait’ll next month, and more Keys you will see!

(* Prize is at the sole discretion of Michael Hume, his heirs and assigns, and some folks in the room. The top prize this month is so freakin’ amazing, you should put forth effort! Don’t sit there a-lazing! The deadline is hung by the chimney with care, and really, it might as well not e’en be there. Boring, lackluster, or unimaginative entries can’t win, and might slip through the sieve. Bad entries embarrass us all, which doth suck. So send the good stuff! Happy New Year! Good luck!)

Last Month’s Grand Prize Winner: Barb M. of Aurora, Colorado won with this: “You are soooo right!!!” It was short, but sweet, and good enough to claim the top prize, if any. Call before 2023 to claim your prize, Barb! And just remember, readers, next year promises twelve more editions of Word PLAY!... and the next big winner could be YOU!
